H-N has spice but it's not overly unrealistic, but gives the campaign AI a bit of a boost (which it needs as it wastes resources quite often). So, N-N is the most 'fair' but the campaign lacks spice. What I really want of course is a better AI that doesn't need to cheat, either in campaign or battles, but apparently in 2009 humanity (in the form of our beloved CA) doesn't have the willingness or ability to grant me that wish for love nor money.

I am not a hardcore player and I like to play a campaign that is at least somewhat historically accurate or at least within the bounds of reason. I think the handicap with VH campaign is so much that you have to be a hardcore player. Also, the AI is very tough in diplomatic negotiations, and demands a lot, but you can get a peace treaty if you pay a lot for it and give some concessions, so I think that's reasonable - hard but not ridiculous. you will have less armies and fleets, etc. But it's definitely challenging, I find, especially with regard to the economic handicap that you get, i.e. On H-N, the campaign AI is fairly aggressive and will start wars against you sometimes it makes strategic sense for them sometimes not. For example, you have the same ships as the enemy but they will outgun you anyway because of their bonuses - so it gets very frustrating and I just couldn't put up with it (I did try it for a while but it drove me nuts). Harder battle difficulty gives unrealistic outcomes for land battles, I might be able to live with it but it makes naval battles too hard, because with naval battles there's not a huge amount that you can do if you are outgunned. Sometimes I quit my campaign I've been playing for days just because I think I've started with the wrong settings and it really sucks when that happens.ДЄnyway from everything I've been trying to read on the forums, and also my playing experience, the best balance for a good, tough game without anything over-the-top unrealistic seems to be H-N, that is hard campaign and normal battle.
